Tips for Travel in Southeast Asia
Based in Chicago, Illinois, Eric Scofield is an assistant general manager at Ruth’s Chris Steak House. When he’s not working, Eric Scofield enjoys getting out of Chicago and exploring the world. He has traveled all over Europe and parts of Asia.
Some who are already familiar with worldwide traveling may initially experience a new set of barriers while visiting Asia. Here are some tips for first-time travelers to Southeast Asia from the Huffington Post:
1. Partake in the food but be careful! Southeast Asia is known for its delicious cuisine but be smart—make sure you see other people eating at an establishment before you do, and if you choose to eat from a street cart, try to pick stations with long lines and freshly cooked foods.
2. Pick up the local magazines. Most Southeast Asian countries will have local English-language guides because of the established expatriate communities. These publications are a great way to get acclimated and also include great tips on where to go and what to do.
3. Take local tours. Sightseeing in Southeast Asia can be less expensive than in other countries. Take advantage of the day trips and boat rides, even if they feel touristy. Also consider hiring a local transport, like a tuk tuk or driver, for a whole day. They can take you around and provide some insight on your surroundings.
